Co-presented with the Suitcase Institute, Incoming Outgoing No. 1 is a communal performance that engages the viewer through the objects contained in Shane Aspegren’s installation called Coming In Going Out Coming Out Going In (2019). These objects—found, fired, or fused with organic bacterial matter—wait to be used as tools, icons, statues, vessels or artifacts by the viewer. Suggestive incantations, embedded within texts and objects, invite participants to activate an emergent energy—a proposal that in itself can be rejected, expanded on and/or executed to one’s satisfaction. Continuing Aspergren’s ongoing work, this performance mobilises the possibilities and limitations of improvisation to explore the meditative capacity of social contact. With the capacity for euphonious intimacies or formal ritual, Coming In Going Out Coming Out Going In explores ideas of monotonous habitual customs, value systems and physical encounters.
This interactive performance will be conducted in Cantonese and English, and will be led by Ivy Yikchit and Chester Wong.
Live events take place on Friday evenings and include presentations by those working in sound publishing, performative readings, and low-fi zine production.
