Curators, artists, and art groups discuss their methodological approaches in voicing the past and present ‘echoes’ of subjugated communities, as well as the process of sharing regional specificities within well established models/modes of articulation including curatorial turns at documenta and international biennales, to exhibition making within institutions and independently, and the role of publishing in their documentation and dissemination. Or is it about the collective articulation in voicing the “echo“ of subjugated communities through their placement in these venues? How does this shift the role of publishing, curating, archival practices and digital influence as recording devices and means of subsequent articulation, and dissemination?

Chimurenga, a pan African platform of writing, art and politics founded by Ntone Edjabe in 2002. Drawing together a myriad voices from across Africa and the diaspora, Chimurenga takes many forms. As Nigerian musician Fela Kuti puts it, simply: who no know go know.

Originally from Whitehorse, Yukon, Candice Hopkins is a citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation. Most recently she was the curatorial director of the Toronto Biennale of Art and was co-curator for SITE Santa Fe’s 2018 Sitelines Biennial and the Canadian Pavilion for the 2019 Venice Biennial, Hopkins has developed major international exhibitions, including Sakahàn: International Indigenous Art (2013), National Gallery of Canada, Close Encounters: The Next 500 Years (2011), Plug In ICA, and dOCUMENTA 14 in Kassel and Athens (2017). She has been published widely and lectured internationally and is the recipient of the 2015 Hnatyshyn Foundation Award for Curatorial Excellence in Contemporary Art.

ruangrupa is a Jakarta-based collective established in 2000. It is a non-profit organization that strives to support the idea of art within urban and cultural context by involving artists and other disciplines such as social sciences, politics, technology, media, etc, to give critical observation and views towards Indonesian urban contemporary issues. ruangrupa also produce collaborative works in the form of art projects such as exhibition, festival, art lab, workshop, research, as well as book, magazine and online-journal publication. As an artists’ collective, ruangrupa has been involved in many collaborative and exchange projects, including participating in big exhibitions such as Gwangju Biennale (2002 & 2018), Istanbul Biennial (2005), Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Brisbane, 2012), Singapore Biennale (2011), São Paulo Biennial (2014), Aichi Triennale (Nagoya, 2016) and Cosmopolis at Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2017). In 2016, ruangrupa curated TRANSaction: Sonsbeek 2016 in Arnhem, NL. ruangrupa will be leading the artistic direction of documenta 15.
