Shinya Tsukamoto gained his fame with his landmark debut feature—a new robotic species-human fused crudely into being with flesh and metal. With his daring, primal imagination, the body is fortified, distorted, and expanded. Sometimes it is in ecstasy, sometimes in throes of agony. Carving out a reality where the boundary between flesh and metal becomes blurred in their fusion, Tetsuo is the apotheosis of the cyberpunk’s vision of apocalypse.
Electric Dragon 80,000V stars the charming Tadanobu Asano and Masatoshi Nagase, who respectively enact the dragon-blooded sonic madman and the electromagnetic wave detective wearing half the mask of a Buddha. The two fight their last battle in the midst of the urban jungle. The film is an autopoiesis of relentless imagination, which bear mutants living symbiotically with machines. It is a cyberpunk rhapsody composed in an abrasive, expressive visual language.
There will also be an additional screening of Gakuryu Ishii’s Master of Shiatsu. The film synchronises bodily rhythms and that of the city in an indescribably bizarre manner. Master of Shiatsu is rarely screened publicly, but Tai Kwun Contemporary has succeeded in procuring a copy of photographic film for this extraordinary occasion.
Tickets are available on Ticketflap. Please book your seats now.
The screening is rated Category III; audiences under 18-years-old are prohibited from buying tickets.
