Edward Lam

Edward Lam is a Hong Kong theatre director and playwright. In the ’80s, he founded the avant-garde theatre group Zuni Icosahedron with friends. In 1991, he set up Edward Lam Dance Theatre whilst based in the UK, which has put up productions in London, Brussels, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other cities. In 1994, his script for Stanley Kwan’s Red Rose, White Rose won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. Returning to Hong Kong in 1995, Lam has since written and directed 58 works. He won Best Director for Man and Woman, War and Peace (2010), The Doppelgänger (2012), and What is Sex? (2017) at the Shanghai One Drama Annual Awards. A firm believer in education, Lam has given lectures at the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Film and Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 2015, four of his adaptations of literary classics were presented as a cinematic showcase. Lam is also a well-known author with a prolific number of titles under his belt, including Waiting for Hong Kong, Entertaining Everyone and Flowers of Evil. In 2016, a monograph written by Hsu Yen Mei “Who’s Afraid of Edward Lam?” was published by the Taiwanese journal Performing Arts Review. The following year, Lam was honoured with the Artist of the Year (Theatre) award by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
