This weekend event focuses on historical image-making and documentaries in East Asia. Focusing on important events in each country and region’s history that have shaped communities, these two films tell meaningful stories that shape a collective imagination. The event explores the historical significance and artistic value of images towards societies in a cultural perspective through a panel discussion and artists’ books display.

Panel Discussion: The Power of the Image- The Traces of History

This talk invites artists and scholars to share their work and perspectives on the visual mediums of documentary and photography, exploring their historical significance as well as their representation of "authenticity". Wang Bo and Pan Lu have created many video works to critique social issues in an artistic way. The photojournalist Paul Yeung, whose photos are published in his themed photobook, abandoned traditional documentary for a humorous portrayal of reality. As the artists present their cultural insights and experience, Kuo Li-hsin will respond accordingly with his expertise in cultural theory.

The panel will be conducted primarily in Cantonese and Mandarin with the availability of simultaneous translation to English.

The panel will last for 90 min, followed by a film and director’s talk.

 

Film 1 (Saturday) - The Fall of Icarus: Narita Stories

What are the stories behind infrastructure building and city planning? The Fall of Icarus: Narita Stories” relates the history of  Narita airport in 1960s, Japan. An integral part of Tokyo’s international transportation network, this film details the story of the construction of this airport by the Eisaku Sato administration and the backlash of the local community, disturbing the peace and serenity of the countryside in Narita.

The panel will be conducted primarily in Japanese with translation to English.

 

Film 2 (Sunday) – Kim Gun (2018)

Featured at the Busan International Film festival, Kim Gun (2018) spotlights a haunting image of a young Korean civilian during the 1980 Gwangju uprising. The image of this young man’s face becomes the symbol of known resistance, with mythologies become constructed around his life and story. He is known simultaneously by the public as the No. 1 Gwang-soo” (a colloquial term for resistance fighters during this historical event), but also as a North Korean soldier, and lost vagrant. This film details a tale of untold history about the Gwangju uprising in the 1980s.

The panel will be conducted primarily in Korean with translation to English.


Hong Kong Actual Images Association

Established in 2017, the Hong Kong Actual Images Association aims at cultivating the reception of documentaries in various forms and styles in Hong Kong.

The organization organizes programmes ranging from featured screenings to seminar and workshops, and had collaborated with renowned partners such as the local video art organization, Videotage, and the Taiwan International Documentary Festival.

 

Dr. Pan Lu

Dr. PAN Lu joined the Department of Chinese Culture, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, as Assistant Professor in August 2015. Her research interests coalesce around the topic of cultural and cross-cultural analysis of various textual forms. She particularly specialises in topics concerning literature, film, visual culture and art, urban culture, creative industries and cities, modernity theories and cultural memory in modern and contemporary China, East Asia and Europe.

Pan studied in Shanghai, Bayreuth and Hong Kong. She was visiting scholar and visiting fellow at the Technical University of Berlin, the Harvard-Yenching Institute, researcher in residence at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and visiting scholar at Taipei National University of the Arts . She was also recipient of DAAD Scholarship, Li Ka Shing Prize for Best PhD Thesis, HKU, and Swire Scholarship among others. Meanwhile, Pan is also actively involved in film and art projects. Her artwork appeared in Urban Living Room, the 10th Shanghai Biennale and her on-going film project “Traces of an Invisible City” has received grants from DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, South Korea. She was also selected artist-in-residence at Center for Art and Urbanistics, Berlin, Germany (Oct- Dec, 2016). In 2018, her film (co-directed with Bo Wang) “Miasma, Plants and Export Painting” received Award of Excellence in Image Forum Festival, Tokyo, Japan.

Pan is author of two monographs: In-Visible Palimpsest: Memory, Space and Modernity in Berlin and Shanghai(Bern: Peter Lang, 2016) and Aestheticizing Public Space: Street Visual Politics in East Asian Cities(Bristol and Chicago: Intellect/University of Chicago Press, 2015). She is co-editor of the book Politics and Aesthetics of Creativity: City, Culture and Space in East Asia, (Los Angeles and Hong Kong: Bridge 21). Her articles on various topics also appear in leading academic journals in cultural and visual studies such as Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, Continuum, Public Art Dialogue, Creative Industries Journal, European Journal of East Asia Studies, Journal of Cultural Research, Landscape Architecture Frontiers, Journal of Visual Art Practice, Media Theory, etc.

 

Paul Yeung

Paul Yeung is an award-winning Hong Kong-based photo journalist and editor. He graduated with a BA of Journalism and Communication from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2000 and a MA in Image and Communication (Photography) from Goldsmiths College, London in 2011. He worked for Reuters and Hong Kong Economic Times; served as the chairman of Hong Kong Press Photographers Association (HKPPA); taught photojournalism part-time at his alma mater and the Chu Hai College of Higher Education. He has curated several exhibitions, and some of his works have been acquired by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and private collectors.

 

Kuo Li-hsin

Kuo Li-hsin got the Phd degree at Department of Media and Communications of Goldsmiths CollegeUniversity of London. Currently an Associate Professor in College of Communication in National Chengchi University. He used to be the judge for different competitions, such as Press Photo of the Year Award, “Golden Horse Awards”, “Taipei Film Awards” and various documentary competitions. Since 2003, he becomes an advisory committee for the “Taipei Film Awards” till now.

His publications include Manufacturing Meaning: Discourse, Power and Cultural Politics in Realist Photography, Writing On Photography, Writing On Photography Again, etc. His recent research focus on cultural studies of photography and documentary.

 

Cheung Tit-leung

Cheung Tit-leung received his PhD in researching the East Asian documentary film festivals. He is currently working as a producer for a number of Hong Kong documentaries, We the Workers (2017) and Ballad on the Shore (2017) for instances. His curatorial efforts include Hong Kong Independent Film Festival and Autonomous Cinema. The Hong Kong Actual Images Association is his latest initiative, a retrospective programme on 1980-1997 Hong Kong documentary was the first project of the association.

 

Bo Wang

Bo WANG (b. 1982) is an artist and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York. At his undergraduate, he studied physics and mathematics at Tsinghua University, Beijing, where he also got his Master's in cosmology. He later studied at School of Visual Arts in New York and received his MFA in photography, video and related media. As an artist, his works have been exhibited internationally, including venues like Guggenheim Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York, Garage Museum in Moscow, Visions du Réel in Switzerland, Image Forum Festival in Tokyo, Essay Film Festival at ICA in London, DMZ Docs in South Korea, CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, Times Museum in Guangzhou, BOZAR in Brussels, among many others. He received a fellowship from the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar in 2013, and was an artist-in-residency at ACC-Rijksakademie 2017-2018 as well as NTU CCA in 2016. He teaches in Visual and Critical Studies and Art History Department, School of Visual Arts, New York.
