YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES
Tobias Berger, Head of Arts at Tai Kwun
Ulanda Blair, Curator, Moving Image, M+

Pioneering Seoul-based digital artists duo YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES present their final-ever public performance, THE ARTIST TALK TO END ALL ARTIST TALKS — OR, THE STRUGGLE SESSION CONTINUES!, an arresting multimedia event featuring brand-new text-based computer animations, synchronised to original musical scores.

This not-to-be-missed presentation will be followed by a discussion between the artists; Tobias Berger, Head of Arts at Tai Kwun; and Ulanda Blair, Curator, Moving Image at M+.

The event will be introduced by Doryun Chong, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, M+.
‘THE ARTIST TALK TO END ALL ARTIST TALKS — OR, THE STRUGGLE SESSION CONTINUES!’ is part of ‘M+ Matters: Art and Design in the Digital Realm’.

Speakers:

Among the first to use the internet as a platform for artistic experimentation, YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES consists of Young-Hae Chang from Korea and Marc Voge from the United States. Their work explores the dynamics of media, technology, and power in our connected world, and takes the form of deceptively simple computer animations using bold texts synchronised with music. Products of the ‘heavy industries’ of conceptual art, their digital animations explore the weighty themes of corporate power, political censorship, and economic globalisation, from the position of South Korea. Their art, created and shown in over twenty-six languages, has been presented at Tate, London; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the New Museum, New York. www.yhchang.com

Tobias Berger is Head of Art at Tai Kwun, the new art and heritage revitalisation project at the Central Police Station compound. He is primarily overseeing Tai Kwun Contemporary, the non-commercial art centre dedicated to presenting contemporary art exhibitions and programmes as platforms for a continually expanding cultural discourse in Hong Kong.
Tobias Berger worked as a Curator at Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany, before curating the 8th Baltic Triennial of International Art in Vilnius, Lithuania. He was the Director of Artspace NZ in Auckland, New Zealand and the Executive Director of Para/Site Art Space in Hong Kong. In 2009 Berger served as curator for the Hong Kong pavilion in Venice. He was the inaugural Chief Curator at the Nam June Paik Art Center in Korea, and worked for M+ during the first five years of the museum’s formation.

Ulanda Blair is Curator of Moving Image at M+, where she leads the development of the moving image collection and dedicated moving image spaces, while also planning interim and future exhibitions, screening programmes, and symposia. Prior to joining M+ in 2016, Blair was Curator at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne, where she organised new commissions and solo exhibitions by contemporary artists Yang Fudong, Julian Rosefeldt, Ian Burns, and Warwick Thornton, among others. She was also co-curator of the ART+FILM screenings and talks series, co-curator of the international touring exhibition DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition, coordinating curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Hollywood Costume, and coordinating curator of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s William Kentridge: Five Themes. She has worked for both the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and the Setouchi Triennale in Japan, and has long been involved in independent arts publishing, writing, and editing.
