Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong is proud to present two exciting local artists working in the medium of audiovisual live performance. Vvzela Kook and Alex Yiu (w/ Video Cypher) are multi-media mavericks who have transformed their traditional training with technologies both old and new. In an uncertain present, they explore speculative futures through sound, light, and electronics.
Vvzela Kook is a new media artist who mainly works in audiovisual mediums, including performance, theatre, and drawing. Her audiovisual works combine media with performance; they explore the possibility of coexistence between contemporary performance types, like dance or choreography, and computer-generated new media. Kook’s video works combine technology with her artistic practice to reproduce and convert urban cityscapes into an integrated virtual experience, guiding the audience on a cybernetic journey. The condensed textures in her works connect with multiple sensual levels in our perception and reintroduce the unexplored potential of video as a medium.
Alexmalism aka Alex Yiu is a sound artist and composer. As a sound artist, his artistic output concerns and experiments with the interpretation of language, power representation in music, history of songs, and the poetics of narratives. By immersing avant-garde musical materials and underground club music elements, his experimental beats are a manifestation of his anxiety from his own conflicting, almost religious ego, to a futuristic dystopian imagination.
Video Cypher is initiated by Anna Chim in 2017, and inspired by LA beat cypher crew Team Supreme. The intention of Video Cypher is about gathering friends to encourage and inspire each other in playing with videos and making progress together. The participating artists are required to interpret certain materials or themes with a goal to learn and explore video editing or animation techniques, hopefully produce some fun results.
