A Short, Performing, Story – Performance Art by Heman Chong
The artist and writer Heman Chong invites you to “A Short, Performing, Story”, a performative and participatory transaction consisting of a short story. The text contains 500 words and has never been read or published before. The instructor holds a copy of the text, while the participant has to learn the story verbatim, before he or she is allowed to leave the room.
Heman Chong’s A Short, Performing, Story is a performance piece consisting of an interaction between an instructor and a group of individual participants, with a short story written by the artist as its core. Approximately 500 words in length, the text was written in English and also here translated into Chinese for the local audience in Hong Kong. Participants are requested to not leave the room until they memorise the story by heart, which is taught verbally by the instructor who holds the text in his/her hands. The artist has promised that this story will never be published on paper or digitally; the content remains known only to the instructor and the participants. As they offer their time (it can take an average of three hours before they completely memorise the text) and energy to receive the gift of the story, a unique way of “reading” it emerges each time the performance occurs.
